With the Paris Agreement’s ambition of limiting climate change to well below 2 °C, negative emission technologies (NETs) have moved into the limelight of discussions in climate science and policy. Despite several assessments, the current knowledge on NETs is still diffuse and incomplete, but also growing fast. Here, we synthesize a comprehensive body of NETs literature, using scientometric tools and performing an in-depth assessment of the quantitative and qualitative evidence therein. We clarify the role of NETs in climate change mitigation scenarios, their ethical implications, as well as the challenges involved in bringing the various NETs to the market and scaling them up in time. There are six major findings arising from our assessment: first, keeping warming below 1.5 °C requires the large-scale deployment of NETs, but this dependency can still be kept to a minimum for the 2 °C warming limit. Second, accounting for economic and biophysical limits, we identify relevant potentials for all NETs except ocean fertilization. Third, any single NET is unlikely to sustainably achieve the large NETs deployment observed in many 1.5 °C and 2 °C mitigation scenarios. Yet, portfolios of multiple NETs, each deployed at modest scales, could be invaluable for reaching the climate goals. Fourth, a substantial gap exists between the upscaling and rapid diffusion of NETs implied in scenarios and progress in actual innovation and deployment. If NETs are required at the scales currently discussed, the resulting urgency of implementation is currently neither reflected in science nor policy. Fifth, NETs face severe barriers to implementation and are only weakly incentivized so far. Finally, we identify distinct ethical discourses relevant for NETs, but highlight the need to root them firmly in the available evidence in order to render such discussions relevant in practice.

The most recent IPCC assessment has shown an important role for negative emissions technologies (NETs) in limiting global warming to 2 °C cost-effectively. However, a bottom-up, systematic, reproducible, and transparent literature assessment of the different options to remove CO from the atmosphere is currently missing. In part 1 of this three-part review on NETs, we assemble a comprehensive set of the relevant literature so far published, focusing on seven technologies: bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS), afforestation and reforestation, direct air carbon capture and storage (DACCS), enhanced weathering, ocean fertilisation, biochar, and soil carbon sequestration. In this part, part 2 of the review, we present estimates of costs, potentials, and side-effects for these technologies, and qualify them with the authors’ assessment. Part 3 reviews the innovation and scaling challenges that must be addressed to realise NETs deployment as a viable climate mitigation strategy. Based on a systematic review of the literature, our best estimates for sustainable global NET potentials in 2050 are 0.5–3.6 GtCO  yr for afforestation and reforestation, 0.5–5 GtCO  yr for BECCS, 0.5–2 GtCO  yr for biochar, 2–4 GtCO  yr for enhanced weathering, 0.5–5 GtCO  yr for DACCS, and up to 5 GtCO  yr for soil carbon sequestration. Costs vary widely across the technologies, as do their permanency and cumulative potentials beyond 2050. It is unlikely that a single NET will be able to sustainably meet the rates of carbon uptake described in integrated assessment pathways consistent with 1.5 °C of global warming.

As you gain traction, it is beneficial for you as an artist to do mixes with outlets that will get you more exposure. Doing a Too Future guest mix or a NEST HQ MiniMix are just two stepping stones that countless emerging artists have checked off in the last two to three years. Many of whom have since grown into international touring acts mind you.

These sorts of blog-branded mixes will provide more exposure to your brand than doing one on your own since they already come with a pre-set of fans that check in regularly to see if artists they like have mixes on the horizon.

Of course, they’ll also give you the opportunity to explore further press since mixes on Too Future (Run The Trap) and NEST HQ are often accompanied by interviews. And of course, it keeps the conversations open for next time since you’ve already gained their respect once.

However, to even get considered for a mix at either place you’ll have to prove yourself as a producer first.

The formula to success isn’t rocket science. Make great music and put it out regularly.

Once you’ve managed to get a few big releases under your belt with a decent amount of press on each, don’t be surprised when blogs come calling about guest mixes and interviews.

Until then don’t bother at all because you’re far more likely to scale through original music rather than DJ mixes.

Again, only after you have an established fan base can you expect DJ mixes to really progress and expand your brand. Putting them out on the regular with no SoundCloud followers or even fans will likely lead nowhere.

If you’re in the rare boat (nowadays at least) of being DJ first, producer second just know that there’s an inherent cap on how well you can succeed as a performer without being able to perform anything that’s inherently yours.

In fact, from the opposite end, it’s much easier. The pressure of needing to be a DJ in order to tour as an electronic music artist no longer exists.

Plenty of producers refuse to DJ at all except for the odd after-party and can sell out huge crowds doing so.

Just look at Porter Robinson or ODESZA.

Until then, work on your own music and be the best producer you can be. Soon enough you’ll land some tasteful blog mix features and a takeover on Nice Hairthen you can really step into the limelight with some properly booked gigs and hopefully even a first festival offer.

There isn't a simple dichotomy of remote versus co-located work, instead there are several patterns of distribution for teams each of which has different trade-offs and effective techniques suitable for them. While it's impossible to determine conclusive evidence, my sense is that most groups are more productive working in a co-located manner. But you can build a more productive team by using a distributed working model, because it gives you access to a wider talent pool.

One of the most profound consequences of the information age is the ability to do so many things while ignoring location. I no longer need to visit most shops, libraries, or travel agents. (I'm looking forward to the day I don't have to visit a dentist.) Most of the world has seen this, but it's particularly obvious to software developers, who are generally at the front of the digital transformation.

Yet when it comes to developing software, many developers do not take advantage of the communication possibilities of connected computers. Yahoo got a lot of press when it recently brought all its off-site workers back to a single site. Leading tech companies like Netflix and Google strongly prefer having their staff in a single site.

Such moves lead others in our profession to point and laugh. Some of the loudest are startups such as Etsy, Basecamp, and Github, many of whose employees have never worked in an office together. For such teams, remote work is the future, those who push against it are on the losing side of history.

While I've been involved in discussions about remote working many times in my years in the industry, I don't feel there is much of a conclusive set of factors I can talk about. The evidence of effects of remote working on software development resist being gathered together in any meaningful way.

That said, I do talk to a lot of teams, and those conversations have led me to some tentative opinions that I'll share here.

The first thing to get straight is that there isn't a simple dichotomy between co-located and remote teams. There's many different varieties, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. To make it easier, here are a few didactic landmarks.
